When I went dress shopping, my mum told me that she would not spend any significant amount of money on something that I didn’t love. The budget was flexible (within reason) but I had to love my dress. Personally, I think it’s a bigger waste to spend 1k on a dress that’s ok and you like, rather than 5k on a dress that is amazing and you love – especially if your dress is a priority. also, having tried wedding dresses on now, I can see why they’re so expensive. There’s so much work that goes into every single dress, they’re engineering masterpieces with a beautifully detailed exterior (I say engineering masterpieces because my dress does amazing things for my waist).

Yeah, I always coiled up a little internally when I heard about people spending a ton on wedding dresses, and while I think there is some element of expensive-dress-arms-race in my feelings, when I think about it I just feel uncomfortable with people going into debt they can’t pay off easily and quickly. If someone who is rich wants to buy a 15k dress as part of their 100k wedding, cool for them. If someone wants to spend 80% of their sensible wedding budget for the dress, then that’s cool too. I love dresses so even as a guest eating Domino’s I’d be thrilled. And really, when it comes down to it I don’t really care about people spending a ton they don’t have on a dress, but it does worry me in a general societal sense if I think about it too much.

One reason to spend the extra money is assurance of product quality. I have heard of many people who ordered a knock-off dress from an on-line site to receive something that looks nothing like the original. The reason the dresses cost ten times more is because of the quality of the materials and the craftsmanship. I’m not saying you might be able to find something at a lower price point with the same quality of work and materials at one of those retailers, but the possibility of wasting money on an unusable product would be enough to make it something I wouldn’t consider personally. It’s all about priorities and comfort-zone. Which leads into my second point about priorities. I think it’s great that the dress isn’t your main focus of the day, but it’s also great that the author loves her dress and is comfortable with what she spent on it. I don’t think it’s fair to label her wedding a “fashion parade” because she chose to go with a designer gown; would we call a wedding where someone spent most of the budget on flowers and decor a “home and garden show”? Or one where beautiful custom letterpress invitations ate up a few thousand dollars wasteful? Sometimes we have to acknowledge that our own priorities aren’t the same as others’ and that is an acceptable way to plan a wedding or live a life.

I totally agree lol. Luckily for me my gf thinks wedding dress is so silly…..but her friends tell her “look at the dress, not the price.” I just think people get emotionally amped up and dont see how silly it is. I bet most of the women advocating these expensive dresses and big weddings would say buying a man a new car just. For him to drive it in a demoliton derby after taking pictures with it would be very wasteful, regardless of how good it made the man feel. Just remember that these rich celebrities throw million dollar weddings because it costs then nothing in relation to thier wealth. Kim Kardashian’s wedding in relation to her wealth would be like a regular working stiff spending a few hundred dollars on a wedding. Yet, the working stiff family easily can spend an ENTIRE YEAR’s gross income on a wedding……pretty silly if you ask me.

You can always sell it after the wedding and recoup a lot of the money! If I had known that before I bought my dress, I think I wouldn’t have been such a cheapskate about it. I bought a JCrew dress for $600, washed it in my bathtub, and sold it two weeks after the wedding for half of what I paid for it. Selling it took about two days online. The girl who bought my dress emailed me pictures of herself in the dress–what fun! She looked great in it. A win for everyone involved. Except I started thinking–huh, maybe I could have afforded something more expensive!

I was just surprised to see this type of support of spending your retirement on a dress you wear once (unless of course you plan to re-sell afterward) on a site called “A Practical Wedding”. It’s only practical if you don’t want to buy a house or enjoy your retirement. If your parents are paying for it, go for it! Spend away! If you and your spouse are a make-your-own-way kind of couple, maybe it’s not what you choose to spend your dough on. The cost of the garment direct is less than the cost of even altering a traditional wedding dress. Less than the cost of a fruit salad at the buffet table. Either could be seen as a questionable expense. But if fifteen other people have ordered the dress and had good luck, seems like a gamble I’d be willing to take.

If you're currently engaged, odds are you might be feeling a bit overwhelmed by one particular area: your wedding budget. That figure will determine how much you'll be able to spend on each and every area of your big day, from the venue down to the smallest details. One of the most notably tough areas to budget for is your wedding dress. How much should you budget for your wedding dress?

As I learned about the wedding dress industry, I became truly fascinated. Not only did I know an Israeli-designed dress when I saw one (the beading! the illusions! the super intricate detailing!), but I also understood what it felt like to be draped in a superbly made dress, and it was sublime.

TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress offers a glimpse into the stressful, sometimes bridezilla-esque nature of choosing the dress, but also is sure to capture the realistic process of balancing the bridal budget. Regardless of a financial plan, sometimes you’ll see the love of the dress outweigh a promise to stick to price limitations. Dream dresses may trump strict budgets, and parents, or even fiancés, plunk down a little more cash to get the bride exactly what she wants. Still, there are other couples who stick to their budgets, no matter what.

I think generally speaking, things that women spend money on that are expensive are considered shallow. Men spend thousands on golf clubs or their boat hobby or whatever. That’s fine. Woman has $10,000 Louis Vuitton purse collection- shallow! The wedding dress to me is an extension of that, perhaps steeped in even more frivolity because it is a dress that you’re most likely going to wear one time and not even for an entire day. At least with a handbag or a pair of designer shoes, you wear those multiple times or so the argument against expensive wedding dresses go.

No, an expensive wedding dress draws flak from men for the same reason men buying a loud stereo system draws flak from women…its a completely selfish useless purchase that serves no useful purpose and is grossly overpriced yet has zero resale value. Thing is, most of those friviolous items that were bought by men mentioned on here by women to justify fashion expenditures are items that have practical value and can be enjoyed together. Woman can go golfing. Woman can enjoy a snowmobile or a motorcycle. Wtf is a man gonna do with a purse or a dress? Fashion exists soley to make the wearer feel better. That said, if you have the EXTRA money for it, it is your decision and you dont deserve to be judged for it. Problem is, weddings are one of those things that people will spend money they DONT HAVE and will struggle for years to make up. Its the equivalent of a man buying a new corvette instead of providing for his kids’ college, drive it ONCE, then park it in the garage and look at it for the next 20 years while it deteriorates. Then, sell it for peanuts to make room for a ferrari…..pretty selfish, right? But somehow its acceptable behavior when it comes to a wedding.
