Off The Rack Wedding Dresses

Stores like J.Crew and BHLDN are great standbys for off-the-rack dress shopping, but many bridal salons stock some designer off-the-rack gowns as well. “We buy our off-the-rack inventory seasonally just like we do our made-to-order dresses,” explains Quinn. “But we try to anticipate what type of dress brides who are buying off the rack might want — for example, for a beach wedding or an elopement — so we have a limited variety in our off-the-rack options.” To help facilitate the shopping process (and save time!), Alexander recommends sending photos of dress styles you like to multiple salons before you book an appointment. This way you'll know if the boutique stocks what you want.

PreviousBrides Are Obsessing Over This Wedding Cake Trend view gallery 65 Photos Wedding dress shopping is sadly not always what it seems. A bridal salon experience can at times feel anything but modern–samples aren’t in prime condition after being tried on by more brides than one can count and are carried in approximate sizing, not yours. Once you fall in love with a gown, dresses are ordered with a six to eight month lead time and are far from made to measure–we hate to be the bridal mythbusters, but they’re simply made to order. This process is a far cry from custom or Couture, where gowns are made to your body’s exact measurements and fabrics and embroideries are chosen in collaboration with the designer and his or her team of expert seamstresses. While the wedding dress salon process works when it comes to ordering almost any gown you’ve spotted on the bridal runways, some brides prefer a more efficient solution–and a dress they can have in-hand a mere days after its purchase. Off The Rack Wedding Dresses

Off-the-rack dresses are typically cheaper than their extravagant salon counterparts due to the lack of excess fabric and embellishments. But that doesn't always mean they're a bargain. Brides who are looking to score a deal should shop towards the end of the season, when many sample dresses are put on the sales floor. The important thing to keep in mind? “When buying a sample dress, make sure to check over the gown thoroughly. If there are any damages, it's up to the client to get them fixed,” says Quinn.

You may not realize it, but buying your wedding gown involves a lot more than showing up at the salon, trying on a couple dresses and then taking home “the one.” Wedding dresses are custom made (fancy right?), so you won’t be taking it home the same day. The salon special orders every dress and once it arrives you’ll need to go back in for fittings to make sure your one-of-a-kind gown fits like a glove.

You might be considering shopping off the rack because you don't have the six months it takes to complete a custom dress. Though that doesn't mean you should wait until the last minute. “Brides still need to build in a fitting schedule,” advises Quinn. “If you want to make adjustments to the design of your dress, such as adding a strap or lowering the back, you should start that process as early as possible. Tailoring that affects the fit, like taking in a waist or letting out a hem, can usually be done on a shorter timeline.” Be sure to schedule a final fitting two to three weeks before the wedding.

The process takes about 6 months in total. So if you don’t have time on your side, you’re going to need a plan B. But don’t worry — this doesn’t mean you have to kiss your dream dress goodbye. There are tons of gorgeous options you can buy off the rack or online. You’ll be able to pick out the perfect dress and still have enough time to have it tailored, if necessary, before your wedding.

Until I found myself without a dress just 20 days before my wedding, I didn’t consider wearing a pre-owned dress. But, while waiting for my last-minute J. Crew appointment, I scoured the Internet for other off-the-rack options, and found that one I absolutely loved — a whimsical Alberta Ferretti gown WITH straps (not spaghetti!) — was being sold for one-third of its original cost by a girl within driving distance. I made it to her apartment, tried on her dress (which was in perfect condition, having only been worn once) and wrote her a check.

J. Crew’s wedding dresses are simple and wonderful — and can be shipped overnight. After I realized that the first dress I bought — which was lost and delayed even though I’d paid to have it rushed — would not fit the way the boutique I bought it from said it would, I found myself sobbing and wandering the streets aimlessly. Then, a friend told me to get to J. Crew. Staffers offered me Pellegrino and tissues and told me they were booked solid, but that if I came back at 8 p.m. (after the store closed!), they would squeeze me in. And they did! Into a dress that arrived at my front door by noon the next day.

If the dress comes in and does not work on your body (did I mention the spaghetti strap suggestion?), you’ll want the store that sold you the dress to feel invested in the final result. Plus, in-house seamstresses are familiar with the dresses on their boutique’s racks, and know ahead of time what’s possible and what’s not.

Some people call me dramatic. I like to say I exaggerate for effect. But everyone admitted my freak-out was warranted when, three weeks before my wedding last October, I found myself without a wedding dress.
